Little Shop of Stories -  A reader writes: “If you’re in Decatur Square (near the courthouse and all the shops), there is a bookstore called Little Shop of Stories that is very supportive of nursing moms. They have several couches where you are welcome to sit down and nurse (they used to have a sign on the door saying as much!). The area is not screened off or anything, so if you would like privacy, this isn’t ideal – but nobody will look askance at you.”

Emory University - A reader writes: “If you’re on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, there are several official nursing/pumping areas. The two that are easily accessible from the quad are in Woodruff Library (3rd floor in the Schatten Gallery; you can pop in the administration office there to ask for more specific directions if you can’t find it) and in the Women’s Center (3rd floor of Cox Hall, where the big foodcourt is). The one in the library is fairly bare bones, but it offers a quiet place with privacy – it is a room that connects to the bathroom where there are 2 chairs that are screened off from view. The one in the women’s center is MUCH nicer – dim lighting, a couch with lots of pillows … very warm and inviting. I wish I had a nursing area like that at home!”

Nordstrom  – A reader writes: I wanted to share that Nordstrom at the Mall of Georgia in Buford, GA (metro-Atlanta) has a great mother’s room.  They have two separate rooms with couches and a changing area with a changing table and sink.  All of the areas have been clean every time I have been in them.

Babies R Us – Kennesaw, GA

Babies R Us – There seems to be a theme going with the rooms at BRU nationwide.  The rooms are there, but they are dirty, neglected, or co-opted for another purpose.  Here is what one mother wrote about her local BRU:

“Babies R Us has a ‘Mothers Room’ in the back near the restrooms. It probably looked nice the first week the store was open, but as it is now I wouldn’t recommend nursing there unless you absolutely have to. It has one small couch, a place where it looks like a second couch would go but is just empty, 2 changing tables w/ cabinets below that look likethey should hold supplies but are empty, and a small table w/ a rack of flyers on it that was falling apart. There is barely enough room for 2 strollers….The couch was very dirty (I’m sure it has never been cleaned), the room didn’t smell clean, but it didn’t smell like dirty diapers. There was no air or ventilation. I would have just nursed him in the car if it hadn’t been 100 degrees outside. They mean well at Babies R Us, but the store managers obviously could really care less about nursing moms.”

Oglethorpe Mall - There is a nice nursing room at this mall.  It is in the restroom area of the new food court, next to the family restrooms.  There is a sink, a gilder rocker, and a loveseat.  Lots of room for a stroller.  There is also a separate, large changing area next to the men's restroom entrance.

There’s a lot of information on the linked page. Apparently mothers who use these rooms are required to ” required to participate in an onsite training program. Participation also requires a signed agreement, which attests to familiarity with lactation center policy, and a commitment to adherence to rules for use of the rooms and the pumps.”

Is anyone out there participating in this program? Leave a comment with details.

Cumberland Mall – Smyrna,GA

Cumberland Mall - There is a GREAT newly renovated area of the mall that has a nursing room. They are renovating the whole mall and have completed the restroom area in the food court. There are the regular men and women restrooms, family restrooms, a beautiful changing area that is open and available outside the restrooms and a nursing room in the women's washroom. It is big enough to get a huge stroller inside of, has a nice comfy chair.
